THE CULTURAL SIGNIFCANCE OF FILA
Fila’s history with the tennis realm dates back to the 1970s when they first branched out into sportswear after previous success creating garments for residents of the Italian Alps. The brand saw the likes of tennis legend Björn Borg sport their pieces throughout his career, most notably during his stints at Wimbledon.

The arrival of two vital figures at Fila changed the projection of the brand, seeing it reach new heights. These were Managing Director Enrico Franchey and Designer and Fila’s Creative Director Pier Luigi Rolando. By the late 1960s, the brand had launched a colourful knitwear line, and when the early 1970s rolled around, the brand had printed its first ‘F-Box’ onto one of its ribbed polo shirts. Something that is now instantly recognisable to the world as Fila’s logo.
Fila’s attention then turned to sportswear, where a familiar face took the brand to new heights.
FILA IN TENNIS
Fila began branching out in the 1970s, expanding into the U.S. and sportswear markets.
Prior to Fila's stamp on the previously unchartered territory of tennis attire, players, particularly at Wimbledon, stuck to wearing white. White has been cited as the 'uniform' of Wimbledon for several reasons, including because it reflects light and keeps players cool during its stint in July. Yet, through Fila's infamous collections, bolder garments became more common on the tennis court, and it all started with one up-and-coming player of the 1970s.

FILA AND GOLDEN AGE OF TENNIS
Fila’s innovation over the years has not gone unnoticed. More recently, the brand has demonstrated this through its collaborations with renowned designers and fashion show appearances. One example is their partnering with Fendi in 2018, which has been coined as a real turning point for the brand in repositioning itself into its current market.
Fila has discussed its aspirations of launching an impactful collection that reimagines and launches an essence of who they are as a brand today. Also noted were the plans to continually acknowledge their sportswear roots and branch out into dedicated stores for these garments.
WHAT FABRIC DOES FILA USE?
Many of the Fila garments we stock at Golden Age of Tennis are made from a combination of cotton and polyester.
Fila’s ongoing sustainability efforts are aligned with three key pillars. These are actions for the planet, creating social impact and sound governance. Each focuses on a different element to create a better impact on the planet and its people.
