Maggia – a part of tennis history
Throughout human history, the number 3 has always had a unique significance. The ancient Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, postulated that the meaning behind numbers was deeply significant – 3 was considered the perfect number – the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding. Three is the Holy Trinity and the three wise men; the beginning, middle and end. Good things come in threes. Tennis is (nearly always) a game of three sets.
John Newcome. Billie-Jean King. Vitas Gerulaitis. Three players with personalities that transcended their sport. Did any female sportswoman ever have a bigger influence outside of tennis than Billie-Jean? Was ever a playboy graced with so natural a talent as Gerulaitis? Was any man on earth ever more recognisable by his facial hair alone than Newcombe? But let’s not forget that these three players won 234 titles, including 56 grand slam titles. They were truly greats of the game. Billie-Jean King and Vitas Gerulaitis all wore Maggia in the late seventies: the Maggia three. Now, Golden Age of Tennis’ first limited edition range of the clothes worn by Gerulaitis, Newcombe and Billie-Jean – lovingly recreated using the finest cloth woven at the Maggia factory in Biella – is available exclusively on the site.
